Welcome to The Picquerist's Cell --- A place that isn't traveled by many, purely by word of mouth. But, if you dare to live big, come gather round and have a listen. Rants, concert and music reviews, and all sorts of crazy madness will occur here. Chances are, it won't be pretty, just making sure that is clear before we move forward. Fair enough? There is your disclaimer. Alright? Cool.
A good friend and I were discussing the current state of music in today's world. He made an interesting point. Recently, Nicki Minaj was announced as a judge on the big rating reality show 'American Idol'. Nicki Minaj.... Yeah... While not a fan, I feel it's still important to at least know a little about as many bands, solo artists etc. as possible. I try to find some kind of meaning, heart felt emotion from someone like her, and ... well.... it hasn't worked out so far.
Here is an excerpt from a very big hit of hers, entitled 'Stupid Hoe'...
Now, a big time show like 'American Idol' only cares about one thing in the end. Respect? No. Class? Hardly. Ratings ---- you got it. And this is how you get the ratings. This is what many younger people are listening to. Things like this flood our Top 40 airwaves, passing as the pinnacle of true artistic talent in America. So, Nicki Minaj is in fact the perfect choice. She is a reflection of our society in a way. Going for the simple, the easy way. Very lazy.
And this isn't really even about this girl. I feel so bad for younger people who don't know any better. They are either being guided by the ill informed or no one at all. There will always be artists trying to one up each other. It's been like that since the beginning of time. But, the fact that people are acknowledging this as 'beautiful' according to one critic, is just depressing. Some may say I am taking the whole thing waaay too seriously. Maybe I am. Too me, music is more than just a chord or a high hat struck at convenient moments.
All the while, really talented artists, song writers etc. are nothing more than a blip on the radar, if that. The example I will use is Mikael Åkerfeldt, guitarist, song writer and vocalist for metal band Opeth. For those who many not know, Opeth is a progressive metal band, often weaving many different styles of music like death metal, folk, and jazz into one. His lyrics are very introspective, and very open to interpretation.
Could you imagine if American Karaoke had him as a judge? The show would a ratings disaster. And that is a shame. I am very lucky to have a father who showed me a different path. A much lonelier path, but a more fulfilling one in the end.
So I ask, who will help these poor kids?

It was me, peering through the looking-glass.
Beyond the embrace of Christ.
Like the secret face within the tapestry.
Like a bird of prey over the crest.
And she was swathed in sorrow, as if born within it's mask.
Her candlelight snuffed, the icon smiled.
Emptiness followed by her wake.
I could clasp her in undying love.
Beyond the embrace of Christ.
Like the secret face within the tapestry.
Like a bird of prey over the crest.
